User-Centered Design (UCD) is a product development approach that focuses on the end users of a product that adheres to the philosophy that the product should suit the user’s needs. The art and science of UCD comes down to the application of UCD principles via research methodologies into the product design and development lifecycle.

The main principles involved in User-Centered Design are:

  1. An early focus on Users and their Tasks
  2. Empirical Measurement of Product Usage
  3. Iterative Design

Therefore, let’s ask some users what they think about your wireframes. :-)

1) Scenario: let’s assume that the user you will be talking to, and will be asking for feedback from, will be performing the task of 1) finding a product within your website’s user interface, 2) once they have found the product, they will add that product into the shopping cart and 3) successfully buy that product. It is up to you to designate a product for them to find and buy.

2) Questions: you shall answer the following questions by asking the users for feedback regarding:

Home Page:

  1. Is it clear from the layout and the features of the page of what this site’s products are and why a user may be interested in them? Why or why not?
  2. Are there any special promotions that seem useful to you? Why or why not? What special promotions would you expect?
  3. When trying to begin the navigation process to find the designated product, are the main navigation categories logical? Are the labels understandable? Why or why not?
  4. Are the utility navigation items and or search features where you would expect them? Why or why not?
  5. Are there any navigation items or pieces of functionality that you would expect missing? Why or why not?

Categories & Subcategories Page:

  1. When navigating to a category or sub-category page, is the layout and the features of the page clear and or what you would expect? Why or why not?
  2. Are the category or sub-category options in terms of labels clear and or logical to you? Why or why not?
  3. Are the category or sub-category options in terms of navigation where you would expect to find them? Are they clear? Why or why not?
  4. Are there any special promotions that seem useful to you? Why or why not? What special promotions would you expect?
  5. Are the groupings of products and or features in the content area logical and or functional to you? Why or why not? How could they be improved?
